Most people don’t realize that the phone in their pocket or the free app they just downloaded could expose them to fraud, privacy violations, or identity theft. Worse, they often don’t know where to report, how to protect themselves, or what rights they have.

To create a digitally secure society where citizens are aware, protected, and empowered to navigate the internet safely — without fear or confusion.

Key Challenges

  • Scams and cyber fraud are spreading rapidly via SMS, WhatsApp, email, and fake websites.
  • Most public-facing apps have poor security and no transparent audit history.
  • Low public awareness about phishing, spyware, fake investment schemes, and misuse of personal data.
  • No standardized certification or labeling system to help users identify trustworthy apps and platforms.
  • Children, seniors, small business owners, and non-English speakers are especially vulnerable.

Our Impact Goals

  • Train 1 million citizens in basic digital safety practices by 2027.
  • Certify or rate 100+ commonly used apps and platforms for safety and transparency.
  • Publish annual “State of Digital Safety in India” reports with actionable insights.
  • Contribute to the development of national-level cybersecurity education policies.

What MDIF Is Doing

Auditing Apps, Platforms & Tools

  • Conducting technical reviews of popular apps used by the public — especially in fintech, education, and social communication.
  • Collaborating with cyber experts to recommend minimum safety benchmarks for app developers and platform operators.
  • Creating an independent SafeTech™ rating system (in development) for apps, plugins, and portals.

Public Awareness & Cyber Hygiene Campaigns

  • Designing and distributing toolkits, posters, and explainer videos on scam detection, privacy protection, and digital safety practices.
  • Running online and offline campaigns in schools, colleges, markets, and panchayats.
  • Hosting Cyber Awareness Weeks in collaboration with law enforcement and regulators.

Support Systems & Reporting Channels

  • Setting up community cyber response volunteers (Jan-Mitra – Cyber Shield) trained to help victims of scams.
  • Exploring a Digital Safety Helpline for real-time scam assistance and education.
  • Encouraging public use of existing platforms like Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and strengthening support for it through training.

Policy and Regulation Advocacy

  • Researching gaps in India’s cybersecurity laws, DPDPA compliance, and digital grievance mechanisms.
  • Working with legal experts to propose new regulatory frameworks for digital safety certifications, ethical AI, and secure-by-design architecture.
  • Participating in government consultations to promote citizen-centric cybersecurity laws.
